75 Years of the Polish Students’ Association – History, People, Heritage
Our Association, Our Alma Mater
University life is more than just lectures, exams, and academic walls. It is a space for debates, ideas, passions, and community, which over the years has shaped not only students but also entire generations of Polish intellectuals.
The Polish Students’ Association (ZSP) has, for 75 years, been the foundation of student activity, a stage for future scholars, cultural figures, and business leaders. This organization’s history is inseparably linked with shaping the academic environment in Poland.
The Birth of a Movement – The Beginnings of ZSP and Its Mission
The Polish Students’ Association was founded on April 17, 1950, during the congress of the Federation of Polish Student Organizations in Warsaw. It was a time when Poland was entering a new political order, and academic organizations were becoming an integral part of public life.
Purpose?
To unite the student community and represent its interests – in the fields of science, culture, living conditions, and student rights.
From the very beginning, ZSP has focused on:
- improving students’ living conditions (dormitories, scholarships, meals),
- developing the scientific environment (academic clubs, scientific conferences),
- supporting the cultural movement (theaters, cabarets, sung poetry),
- organizing student tourism (mountains, Masurian lakes, international trips).
However, the history of ZSP is not just about statutes and resolutions – it is about the people who turned this movement into something more than just a student organization.
The People of ZSP – Who Shaped the Student Community?
Culture and Media – Talents Nurtured in Student Clubs
- Konstanty Gebert – renowned journalist and publicist, co-founder of „Gazeta Wyborcza”, began his journalistic journey in student newspapers.
- Marian Grześczak – poet, prose writer, translator, associated with the literary and artistic movement supported by ZSP.
- Elżbieta Wojnowska – legendary student singer, whose song „Zaproście mnie do stołu” became an anthem for multiple generations.
- Jacek Kleyff – poet, bard, satirist, one of the most recognizable figures in Poland’s alternative scene.
- Jan Wołek – writer, artist, bard, whose work has become an integral part of Polish student culture.
- Teatr KTO – a phenomenon of student culture, still a symbol of independent art today.
The Historical Commission of the Student Movement – Guardians of Memory
The Symbolism of the Logo

The logo of the Historical Commission of the Student Movement is deeply rooted in the idea of preserving, documenting, and passing on the heritage of the student academic movement. It features a stack of old books – a symbol of knowledge, history, and recorded memories. This visual representation reflects the idea that every generation of students has contributed to shaping the academic and social reality.
The ribbon inscribed with “Historical Commission of the Student Movement” highlights the mission of the organization: to protect the memory of the student movement, collect archival materials and documents, and organize meetings and events.
Our Mission
To ensure that the history of ZSP is not forgotten, the Historical Commission of the Student Movement documents and preserves the legacy of the student academic movement, collects memories, archival materials, and photographs, and organizes events and meetings of former ZSP members.
